Overview
The ukiyo-e woodblock prints which were so popular in the Edo Period gradually lost their impact with the influx of western painting techniques in the Meiji Period. In these circumstances, a new type of woodblock printing was established which aimed for a higher level of technical expertise while still using traditional production methods. In this exhibit we will introduce a variety of works produced with this new method, focusing on the landscapes by Kawase Hasui and Tsuchiya Koitsu, artists who were active in the genre that was called Shin Hanga (“New Woodblock Print”).
