Overview
“One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets” (Hyakunin Isshu), an anthology of 100 superb tanka poems selected by Fujiwara no Teika, and compiled in the early Kamakura period, gave rise to the pairing of selected tanka poems with illustrations from other stories and popular fashions of the time. This exhibition introduces two of these in the museum's collection, the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (illustrated by Toyokuni III, Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige) and the Hyakunin Isshu no Uchi (illustrated by Kuniyoshi).
