Overview

Aoki Tosaku (1870-1946) was the third son born to Aoki Rokuryo and his wife Yoshi of Shioya County in Tochigi Prefecture. Deeply impressed by the magazine Kokumin no Tomo (The People’s Friend) published by Tokutomi Soho, in 1888 Tosaku visited Soho’s home in Tokyo where he met Soho, received such teachings as, “Let your ideals be high, your life humble,” and thereafter became Soho’s faithful follower. Their relationship continued until Tosaku’s death in 1946. Tosaku’s collection of works was strongly influenced by Soho, and is highly diversified. With Utagawa Hi-roshige and related ukiyo-e at the core, Tosaku collected the works of Kawamura Kiyoo, Kubota Beisen, locally born Arai Hirokata and Kobori Tomone. 　At this exhibition, we have selected the hand-painted works of Utagawa Hiroshige and the master-pieces from the calligraphy and artwork of Kawamura Kiyoo, presenting but a portion of the art-work Aoki Tosaku collected.
