Overview
“False Murasaki and The Rustic Genji” resets The Tale of Genji in the Muromachi Period. It is the story of the family troubles that entangle Mitsuuji due to his amorous wanderings. Published in 1829, it became an instant best-seller. However, the rumor spread that it was a parody of life in the ladies chambers of then Shogun Tokugawa Ienari, and this was dealt with by banning sales of the work, in its unfinished state, as part of the Tenpo Era Reforms. In spite of this, Ashikaga Mitsuuji’s popularity soared. Even after the ban Genji artwork depicting Mitsuuji continued to be created by many ukiyo-e artists.
In this exhibit, we showcase Genji artwork, focusing on works by Utagawa Toyokuni III. We think you will enjoy seeing how Mitsuuji’s hairstyles and chic fashions influenced the young people of the time.
