Overview
In the latter years of his life, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced his monumental The 60-plus Provinces, a set of 70 oban-sized prints published between 1853 and 1856 by the Koshimura-ya Heisuke publishing house. Hiroshige II (1826-69) also undertook One Hundred Famous Views of the Provinces, an incomplete set of 85 oban-sized prints published between 1859 and 1861 by the Uo-ya Eikichi publishing house, with the same theme. However, for most of the works, neither Hiroshige nor Hiroshige II actually traveled to the places they depict, and their studios produced these works by referring to books and other resources. Hiroshige interjected weather, season and time of day into the scenery of each locale as depicted in the reference materials, producing works with realistic spatial expression and rich lyricism. Hiroshige II likewise borrowed designs from the resource materials, using spatial expansion and vivid colors worthy of the successor to Hiroshige's artistic style, and producing imaginative scenic landscapes which rivaled those of Hiroshige.
In this exhibit, by displaying these works of Hiroshige and Hiroshige II side by side-works which were produced with the same Famous Views of the Provinces theme-we introduce the differences in the individuality of these two artists and the further development of artistic skills and methods inherited by Hiroshige II from Hiroshige.
