Overview
In whatever sphere, when a group reaches a certain size, it is natural for factions to form. This was also true in the world of ukiyo-e, where subgroups developed. In the world of art, these groups are called schools.
In the Edo Period there were numerous art schools, but the group that dominated the ukiyo-e world at the end of this period was the Utagawa School. It had an overwhelming number of artists compared to other schools at that time. The works of one of these artists, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), make up the core of our collection.
To commemorate our sixth anniversary at the Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art, we present a survey of 120 works in a two-part exhibition series. These works are by Utagawa School founder Utagawa Toyoharu, his successors Toyokuni, Kunisada, Hiroshige’s teacher Toyohiro, and Hiroshige and his pupils Hiroshige II and Hiroshige III. By tracing the history of the Utagawa School of the Edo Period, you will discover the relationship between teacher and pupil, and between fellow pupils. This exhibition also introduces works by artists of other schools that flourished during the same time period. We are pleased to present the masterpieces Hiroshige has left us today, along with the works in which his art is grounded.
