Overview
The "warrior prints" of Utagawa Kuniyoshi stand alongside the "kabuki star prints" of Toyokuni III (Kunisada) and the landscapes of Hiroshige as some of the most influential of late Edo period ukiyo-e. Yet it is in his "comical prints" (giga) that the quintessence of Kuniyoshi's free thinking can be seen - in his personifications of cats and birds, and in the skill with which captures the facial expressions of comic characters. One can't help but smile at the loveable charm of these pictures. They transcend their time, accessible and fascinating to all, whatever one's age or background.
This exhibition features, besides Kuniyoshi's own works, pieces by his students, who were active through into the Meiji period, in a display of some fifty pieces which will appeal to both children and adults alike.
