Overview
In autumn 2003, we celebrate the third anniversary of the museum's opening by sponsoring a special exhibition, "Famous Ukiyo-e Works from the Chiba City Museum of Art Collection."
The Chiba City Museum of Art opened in November, 1995, and is renowned for its collection and exhibitions emphasizing the artwork of Edo. The museum's broad-based collection makes it possible to survey ukiyo-e works such as paintings & drawings, woodblock prints, and books in historical order. It houses one of this country's preeminent collections.
With the cooperation of the Chiba City Museum of Art, this exhibition brings you these works of ukiyo-e art-from the genesis of ukiyo-e at the beginning of the Edo Period, through the golden ages of the Tenmei and Kansei eras, up until the Meiji Period came to an end-all in one exhibit. This is the first time that the Chiba City Museum of Art's ukiyo-e art collection has been displayed anywhere in the world in such a complete fashion.
