Overview
The classic work ‘The Tale of Genji’ has been read from generation to generation over the past thousand years. In the Edo Period, Ryutei Tanehiko adapted of The Tale of Genji into a picture book called ‘The Rustic Genji,’ attracting more people to the work. In this exhibit, we introduce the world of the Tale of Genji as imagined in ukiyo-e art, centering on ‘The Color Print Contest of a Modern Genji’ by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), who worked on the fabric prints for The Rustic Genji.
